Tove Jansson Constellation: Modes of Literary Engagement

A gathering of works that circle Tove Jansson’s literary world – books that echo her themes, illuminate her landscapes or move in conversation with her art

🚀

Engaging with Tove Jansson extends far beyond her own books. Her work creates a kind of gravitational field, drawing in history, influence, resonance and reinvention. These four modes of orbiting the author offer a simple way to describe the paths I’ve chosen to move around her life and art within the Tove Trove project – through context, kinship, reimagining or reference.

The field is wide, wonderfully rich and ripe for harvesting. What follows are a few of my own discoveries, offered in the hope of sparking curiosity about Jansson’s creative constellation. More will follow.

The Winter Warriors by Olivier Norek (F, 2025, Open Borders Press, translated from French): Read my thoughts on Olivier Norek’s historical novel, which traces the Winter War that shaped Tove Jansson’s early world and deepens my Reading Around Tove journey at Reading Around Tove: The Winter Warriors.

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May (NF, 2020, Penguin Random House, pages 20-21): May reflects on Moominland Midwinter, drawing on Moomintroll’s early waking as part of her wider meditation on wintering, solitude and renewal.
