My 2018 Book Booty
This lovely lot appeared under my Christmas tree: a multitude of Moomins and a Margaret Atwood – I could wish for no more. The former are part of the gorgeous Collectors’ Editions Series, which will require a spell of rereading Tove Jansson’s marvellous tales of philosophical Finnish trolls.
Did you receive any books or book-related gifts?

You lucky, lucky, lucky woman! Moomins are my favourite anyway, and my editions are far less fancy than yours!

Wow – Moomintopia! I’ve never read one of those as I was a bit scared of them as a child!

Really? What a shame. I wonder why? I’ve always had a soft spot for Moomins.

I’m not sure that I’ve read any Moomins and now I want to! Beautiful editions, Paula! It looks like the perfect Christmas loot to me! Happy New Year! ♥️

Those are beautiful Moomin editions. I love Tove Jansson in general. And Atwood is another prize!
I bought myself a Christmas book present, the new one-volume edition of the Earthsea series. It makes me happy to see that on my shelf. Wishing you lots of good reading this year!

I’ve yet to read the Earthsea series, Lory but I know exactly what you mean about the sight of certain books sitting on one’s shelves bringing pleasure. I very much look forward to your comments – although, I expect it will take you some time to read the entire volume! 😃

Christmas gifts? Only one — Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — but then I’m notoriously difficult to buy books for! However, for accompanying choir rehearsals I did get a substantial book voucher which I’m now eking out, having only bought an Alan Moore graphic novel, Charlotte Brontë’s The Green Dwarf, a collection of her Angrian stories from her juvenilia (I already have her adult tales) and Atwood’ s Hag-seed.
As with some of your other readers I haven’t yet fallen under the Moomin spell but I do intend to seek out more of her adult novels.

I hadn’t picked up on you being a fan of Harry Potter. I had fun reading them with my niece and nephew who were roughly the same age as the characters when the books were first published.
An interesting selection of titles, Chris. I too enjoy Jansson’s adult books – including her short story collections. Hope you like Hag-seed.

I’m a Potter fan, but never got round to reviewing the HP books, just the Beedle volume and the script of the first Fantastic Beasts film. Sometime (this must be one of my most used blogging words) I’ll get round to reviewing them!

Hi Paula,
You were blessed by Santa this year! An Atwood must have been just what you wanted. I think it’s great to really admire one writer (I have a great affection for the work of Edward Upward so I can empathise with literary fandom).
I’m afraid I resorted to dropping a hint, so I received ‘Economics for the Many” edited by John McDonnell MP. Ordering it from Verso was cheaper than getting it from The Guardian website. The chapter by Ann Pettifor was particularly enlightening- she’s pro-European, but very much of the left, and has a great understanding of how the economy could work in terms of a Green New Deal.
Happy New Year.

I most certainly was, John. I’m always delighted to find an Atwood under the tree. I have many favourite authors but she’s definitely the fairy on the top.
Your book sounds fascinating. I have a great deal of respect for Ann Pettifor. I wish more people would take notice of the things she says.

Ooooh, what lovely Moomin editions – mine are all tatty paperbacks from various sources! And I haven’t read that Atwood for yonks but did love it. I ended up with quite a good few books as you’ve probably soon – being gifted books is a wonderful thing!

Thank you, Kaggsy. While I love these collectors’ editions, I still have a great fondness for my ‘tatty paperbacks’ – we’ve been through so much together. You’re so right, books are the most wonderful gifts one can bestow or receive. 😊

Yay for the Moomins! You’ve reminded me that I have one sitting on the shelf waiting for the right moment for a reread. Hm. Perhaps the right moment will be soon . . .

I love your new Moomin books – what gorgeous editions they are! I’m so tempted by them 🙂 I got a stack of books for Christmas and have so far read one of them – The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar and it was brilliant. I hope you enjoy all of your new books.

I’ve only just ‘found’ her. She seems to be one of those authors that splits people into two groups; people who don’t know her and people who love her! At Freddie’s is fantastic. Thanks.

I was so happy to receive After Many Years, the most recent collection of L.M. Montgomery’s short stories. 🙂

Thank you, Naomi. It’s part of the modern Virago series, which I’m attempting to collect. Your Montgomery short story collection sounds interesting. Do you know, I’ve never read Anne of Green Gables or anything else by this author. It’s a disgraceful state of affairs and one I must remedy before much longer!
